From the President: Nurturing Tomorrow's Family Doctors: in Malaysia and around the world

I was recently in the Malaysian city of Kuching in Sarawak, on the mystical island of Borneo, and met family doctor Maila Mustapha. Like Dr Maila, as family doctors we all work hard, and many of us work under difficult conditions. Sometimes the resources that we need to do our job are not available. Sometimes the hours we work and the demands on our time can be arduous.

Quiero rendir homenaje a nuestro Grupo de Trabajo sobre la Práctica Clínica Rural de WONCA, que durante los últimos 22 años ha sido un gran defensor, además de muy eficaz, de dar formación y apoyo a un número suficiente de médicos de familia rurales cualificados, para poder satisfacer las necesidades de salud de las personas que viven en zonas rurales de todos los países del mundo.

“Any patient with any problem, anytime and anywhere” - I pay tribute to our WONCA Working Party on Rural Practice, which, for the past 22 years, has been such a strong and effective advocate for training and supporting sufficient numbers of skilled rural family doctors to meet the health care needs of the people living in rural areas in all nations of the world.

El Dr. Yin Shoulong es un médico general rural en Tai Shitun Village, en China. Vive en una típica casa de pueblo rural, construida alrededor de un patio central. Su clínica ocupa un lado de la casa. Sus pacientes son de su comunidad agrícola y muchos son pobres, ancianos y frágiles.

Dr Yin Shoulong is a rural general practitioner, in Tai Shitun Village, in China. He lives in a typical rural village house built around a central courtyard, with his clinic occupying one side of his home. His patients are from his farming community and many are impoverished and elderly and frail.

El mes pasado me invitaron a visitar las comunidades de la región de Fukushima, en Japón, afectada por el tsunami y el desastre del reactor nuclear. Yo tenía muchas ganas de aprender sobre el papel que los médicos de familia locales y sus equipos siguen desempeñando para ayudar en la recuperación de los supervivientes de las comunidades devastadas. Fue una semana aleccionadora.

Last month I was invited to visit communities in the Fukushima region of Japan affected by the tsunami and the nuclear reactor disaster. I was keen to learn about the role local family doctors and their teams are continuing to play in assisting in the recovery of the surviving members of the devastated communities. It was a sobering week.
