As a frequent visitor to Brazil and other countries in Central and South America over the past few years, I am very impressed by the work our WONCA member organisations are doing in this part of the world, especially to ensure both quality and equity in family medicine for the people of this region of the world.

I was in Romania in June to deliver the opening address at the 2015 World Psychiatric Association Congress. The visit provided me with the opportunity to meet with Sandra Alexiu and other family medicine colleagues in Romania and to discuss some of the challenges facing family medicine and the delivery of universal health coverage.

El pasado junio estuve en Rumaníapara pronunciar el discurso de bienvenida del Congreso de 2015 de la Asociación Mundial de Psiquiatría. La visita me dio la oportunidad de conocer a Sandra Alexiu y a otros colegas médicos de familia en el país y pudimos conversar sobre los retos de la medicina de familia y la cobertura sanitaria universal.

La Región Mediterránea Oriental es la nueva región de WONCA, aunque la medicina de familia se instaló ahí hace ya mucho tiempo, tal y como nos demuestran los escritos del Antiguo Egipto. Esta nueva Región Mediterránea Oriental se extiende desde Marruecos, en el oeste, hasta Afganistán, incluyendo más de 20 países .

Family Medicine in the East Mediterranean Region

The WONCA East Mediterranean Region is WONCA’s newest region, but family medicine has been in this region for a very long time, as we have seen from the writings of Ancient Egypt. WONCA’s East Mediterranean region extends from Morocco in the west, to Afghanistan in the east, and includes over 20 countries.

Estuve en Ghana, asistiendo al Cuarto Congreso Regional de WONCA para África, presidido por el Dr. Henry Lawson de Ghana, presidente electo de nuestra región WONCA de África. Originalmente, el Congreso había sido pospuesto debido a la crisis del Ébola.

I was in Ghana attending WONCA’s 4th Africa Regional Conference. The conference was chaired by Dr Henry Lawson from Ghana, president-elect of our WONCA Africa Region.
Originally the conference had been postponed because of the Ebola crisis.
