Domestic Violence & Indian Women's Health

Indian women, like women world over , have suffered due to domestic violence in different forms eg. Physical, emotional & mental abuse. In 18th Century Purdah System, Sati System, Female Infanticide were prevalent.In Sati system the hindu widow, on the death of her husband had to burn herself alive, was abolished by law in 1829. Female infanticide or killing of new born daughters was abolished by law in 1829. In 19th Century Childhood marriage, Polygamy & unequal marriage were rampant.The widow remarriage Act of 1856, allowed widows to remarry.

In 20 th Century Dowry deaths by in laws , for financial gifts from bride's parents was frequent . In 21th Century . Indian women are increasingly educated & joining more and more work force & are increasingly confident & have won numerous world beauty contests . The nature of domestic violence on women have also changed to : Beating up, Serious physical injury, Sexul abuse , Rape, Sell , buy or even Murder. Medical Effects Of Domestic Voilence on Indian Women especially Physical injury eg .Bruise, laceration, abrasion, fracture, burn etc. with health care cost of minimal Rs. 1084 / per episode.In Murder or death occurring during domestic violence the assailent in 18% is couple /previous couple, in 10-30 % lover/love, in 10.2% close relative, in 22.2% known/friend, in 8.8% unknown & in 30.9% cases the killer remains unidentified. Nutritional loss to the whole family occurs after domestic voilence because family food is not cooked as man absents from duty & does not earn causing Rs. 2000/ loss per episode in 42 % of domestic violence. In India only 30% complaints are lodged by women , but 50% of them are as a result of domestic violence.The future of Indian Women appears to be improving due to growing activism of judiciary, government & women organizations.
