Folate and dementia
Higher folate levels may be protective against cognitive decline and dementia. In part, this works through the effect of folate on homocysteine levels, but there may also be a direct mechanism by which folate affects the nervous system.
In this new issue we review the latest evidence on this topic, including some randomised clinical trial data. We also discuss the possible adverse effects of giving folate supplements to patients with undetected or sub-clinical vitamin B12 deficiency
