Family Medicine Training Program in India

Dear Dr Fabb

In response to Dr Shatendra Gupta's message published on Wonca's homepage, I want to bring to the notice of the Wonca family the recent developments in the Family Medicine Training Program in India.

Family medicine is a very much happening thing in India. The Government of India in its "Health Policy 2002" (http://mohfw.nic.in/np2002.htm) has declared its commitment towards the development of family medicine specialists. It is true that family medicine has not been taken into regular university-based postgraduate training pending large scale medical curriculum reforms. There is a well structured three year postgraduate program in family medicine in place and being run at NBE (National Board of Examinations www.natboard.nic.in) accredited hospitals and institutes all over India. Currently 81 multi specialty hospitals/institutes (including the famous Christian Medical College Vellore http://www.cmch-vellore.edu/pages/?id=admission and Apollo hospitals Hyderabad) are accredited by NBE contributing to about 250 postgraduate training posts in family medicine annually (the largest anywhere in South East Asia).

The qualification after completion of training and final examination is DNB (Diplomate of National Board) in family medicine. This qualification is recognized at par with any postgraduate qualification in India and is recognized by the MCI (Medical Council of India) and the Government of India. The National Board of Examinations is known for very high and stringent standards of examinations. NBE maintains uniform standard of training all over India and is regarded as the benchmark of quality postgraduate training, and is currently promoting family medicine training all over India as per policy of the Government of India. Since NBE is involved with all specialties and subspecialties, it is not member of Wonca.

It may take some time for trained family physicians to take charge. We will soon be visible on international forums ready for a genuine contribution towards development of family medicine in India/MESAR/Wonca.

Regards

Raman Kumar

My thanks to you and your team

I just want you to know how much I appreciate your Journal Alerts. You can slip under the sheets tonight certain of one thing; today you made a real contribution to the care of Richard (my patient) in a small village in Ireland. God knows how many other ‘Richards’ there are across the globe.

My thanks to you and your team.
