Prof Dr Thomas Frese (Germany)

Thomas Frese was born in 1980 in the former GDR, he graduated School in Klingenthal, Saxony in 1999. Thomas Frese studied medicine at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany (2000-2007). During his studies the high interest towards general practice and family medicine increased. Since 2007 he worked as a general practice trainee at different disciplines of medicine. Thomas Frese works part-time at the Department of General Practice of the Medical Faculty in Leipzig, Germany (since 2008). He finished his doctoral thesis – an investigation towards melatonin-insulin interactions in diabetic and non-diabetic rats – at the Institute of Anatomy (University Halle-Wittenberg) with the quote "summa cum laude" in 2009. Thomas Frese is engaged in teaching medical students, tutoring doctoral candidates and conducting research projects in a postdoctoral position at the Department of General Practice of the Medical Faculty in Leipzig. The results of his research are published in international journals. He completed the specialization in general practice in 2012. Since 2013 he is working as a general practitioner in a rural area north from Leipzig, Germany. General practice trainees are supervised in his practice since 2014. The work as associate Editor of BMC Family Practice started also in 2014. Together with his partner, Louise, he has two sons (born in May 2015 and December 2017). Since 2016 Thomas Frese is German national representative and member of the executive board of the European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN). Thomas Frese is Professor and Head of Department of the Institute of General Practice at the Medical Faculty of the University Halle-Wittenberg since October 2016. He became Honorary Secretary of the EGPRN in October 2018 and Member of the WONCA Europe executive board in June 2019. He is serving as WONCA Europe President for the term 2025-2027.
