WONCA Special Interest Group on Family Violence renamed WONCA SIGPRAV

The WONCA Special Interest Group on Family Violence has been renamed the WONCA Special Interest Group on Prevention and Response to Abuse and Violence, WONCA SIGPRAV.

The updated name reflects the growing breadth of the group's work in family medicine and primary care, including prevention, early identification, trauma-informed care, recovery, advocacy, research and professional support. It also recognises the many forms of abuse and violence that may present in primary care, including family and domestic violence, sexual and gender-based violence, child abuse and abuse of elderly people, violence against LGBTQ+ people, and other forms of abuse and violence that may occur across the lifespan.

WONCA SIGPRAV brings together family doctors and primary health care professionals committed to safe, compassionate, culturally sensitive and evidence-based care for survivors of abuse and violence. The group will continue to share guidance, resources, training, research and practical experience, while supporting the health and resilience of the professionals who provide this care.

This renewed identity marks an important step for the group and its global community of members, with a wider scope, a clear purpose, and continued commitment to prevention, response, equity and human rights in primary health care.
