After completing his medical education in his motherland in 1992, Dr Lawson has remained in the country to promote academic growth. He was the second to qualify as a Family Physician by examination in Ghana and was the first lecturer to be employed by the University of Ghana to establish a unit to incorporate Family Medicine in undergraduate medical training in March, 2007. Being a product of the system affords him a unique opportunity to effect progress.

He has traveled extensively in Africa and the world and has a rich knowledge about the challenges of establishing Family Medicine de novo in a country. He has delivered papers at international fora on the Development of Family Medicine in Ghana. He has also hosted several conferences and seminars due to his keen interest in continuous professional development of doctors in practice. He successfully introduced and still chairs the annual Medical Knowledge Fiesta of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons since 2011. He was the Chair of the Host Organising Committee of the 4th Africa Regional Conference in Accra, Ghana in May, 2015.

He is currently an Examiner and the immediate past Chair of the Faculty of Family Medicine of the Ghana Chapter of the West African College of Physicians, Ghana Chapter. He also works as a Senior Specialist to the Korle Bu Polyclinic where he trains about 25 residents in Family Medicine.

He is the foundation Chief examiner for the registration examination for physician assistants (Medical, Oral Health and Anaesthesia) by the Medical and Dental Council (MDC), Ghana since 2014 when this was inaugurated. He is also the brain behind the first formal private revision programme for foreign trained medical doctors preparing for the registration of new doctors examination of the MDC, Ghana.

In the University of Ghana, he teaches undergraduates and supervises their dissertations. He is also the Hostel Master of the Medical students hostels in Korle Bu. He is a member of several committees and boards.

His research interests are Development of Primary care research, Quality of healthcare, Training needs of health workers and Women’s health
