In Memoriam: Dr. Marc Verbeke

With deep sadness and tears, we must share the news of Marc's passing.

A beloved husband, father, and remarkable general practitioner. A person where compassion met intellect and empathy intertwined with expertise.

Marc was more than just a doctor; he was a beacon of person-centered care, a staunch advocate for the narrative of the patient. In his practice, he held steadfast to the belief that understanding the person behind the illness was paramount to effective healing. His patients were not merely cases to be solved but individuals deserving of respect, dignity, and personalized attention.

Marc believed in using both evidence-based medicine and thoughtful reflection. He understood the importance of data but also recognized its limitations. With an unwavering commitment to his patients' well-being, Marc combined the rigors of science with the art of listening, ensuring that a treatment plan was tailored to the unique needs and preferences and approval of those under his care.

Beyond his clinical duties, Marc was deeply engaged in the advancement of registration and classification in the field of primary care. As a long-standing member of the WONCA International Classification Committee, he played a pivotal role in shaping the future of medical classification. His dedication to the development of ICPC3 exemplified his tireless efforts to ensure that primary care physicians had access to accurate and comprehensive diagnostic tools, enhancing the quality of care delivered to patients worldwide.

In Marc's passing, we mourn not only the loss of a skilled physician but also a compassionate healer, a mentor, and a friend. His absence leaves a void in our hearts. Yet, as we reflect on his life and legacy, we are reminded of the profound impact he had on those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.

Rest in peace, dear Marc. Your legacy will continue to inspire the bounds of medicine.
